Ambulance Services

In many of the countries where the Order works, St John is providing vital ambulance and rescue services for the communities which they serve.

Ambulance services include:

  • Emergency services
  • Patient transportation
  • Mobile posts during public duty events such as football matches and festivals
  • Business contract services.

St John organisations aim to forge close links with the national health services in the countries in which they work, in order to provide the most effective and relevant service possible. In many countries, there is no public ambulance provision, so St John is offering a unique and lifesaving service. Ambulances are also a good way of raising awareness of St John, with the large logos and print making them useful marketing tools!

In New Zealand, St John provides ambulance services for approximately 85% of New Zealand's population. Each year, 700 paid and 2200 volunteer St John Ambulance Officers care for and save the lives of thousands of New Zealanders and visitors to the country.

In Malaysia, St John offers a 24 hours emergency ambulance service to hospitals in Penang Island, Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley. In additional to emergency ambulance services, St John Ambulance also provides non-emergency ambulance services for the general public to bring patients home from anywhere in Malaysia and Singapore in all major cities across the country. They are currently the largest serving NGO ambulance fleet in Malaysia with more than 60 fully equipped ambulances.

As well as ambulance services, St John Scotland and St John Malta have developed much needed rescue services. The Priory of Scotland finances bases and vehicles for mountain rescue teams across the country as well as a rescue boat on Loch Lomond.
