St John Association of Bermuda

Who we are

St John Ambulance Bermuda has been attending to the first aid needs of the Bermuda community since 1894. Our volunteers provide over 4000 hours of their time each year to serve their communities.

Bermuda at a glance

Bermuda is a British overseas territory in the North Atlantic Ocean. Located off the east coast of the United States, it is situated around 1770 km northeast of Miami, Florida, and 1350 km south of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the oldest and most populous remaining British overseas territory.

In 2008 the population was estimated to be 66,546 and the capital is Hamilton. Bermuda has a highly affluent economy, with a large financial sector and tourism industry giving it the world's highest GDP per capita in 2005.

What we do

Public Events: A big part of what St John does is assisting the community at public events. St John attended over 500 events last year, ranging from sporting events to social gatherings such as:

  • International Race Weekend
  • Cup Match Festivities
  • Bermuda Day Festivities
  • Bermuda Motor Sports Events (Motor Cross, Powerboat, Go-Karting, Motorcycles)

Training: St John provides first aid and CPR courses to members of the public. St John distributes and maintains automatic heart defibrillators throughout the Island. They also provide the training required to use these life saving devices.

Ambulance Service: St John services are supported by three ambulances and one ambulance/mobile clinic. St John is a trailblazer for emergency transport on the island with a highly diverse fleet. All the drivers are fully qualified to operate the vehicles. A crew consists of a driver, and attendants who treat the patient en route to the hospital. Each vehicle is fully equipped including AED (Automatic External Defribulator). Radio communications for the vehicles and personnel are provided by Telecom.

St John is a member of the Emergency Measures Organization (EMO). St John’s fourth vehicle (the mobile clinic) has enabled them to become involved with Health Promotion - providing public screening clinics for hypertension and blood glucose monitoring.

Youth:
St John operates a cadet program, which accepts young people between the ages of 10 and 16. It teaches them about St John Ambulance, first aid (basic and advanced), volunteering, and Bermuda. St John is also an alternative for young people who do not want to do their national service in the military.
