Care in the Community
St John organisations have found many ways to support and care for the communities which they serve.
St John volunteers are often present at public events and festivals, providing first aid and advice to those who need it. Events include football and cricket matches, marathons and religious festivals.
As well as providing First Aid, St John volunteers are providing a huge range of health care and support services within communities.
Across Africa, St John volunteers are providing home-based care to people infected and affected by HIV and AIDS. Volunteers visit the homes of patients and assist in the management of their client’s condition and treatment and support their link to other referral services.
In Malawi, St John runs a primary health care programme in townships around the commercial capital, Blantyre. Around 60 trained volunteer community health workers provide health education and medicine for women and children.
Other programmes include a baby growth-monitoring scheme by St John Zambia, care for the elderly in Hong Kong and first aid in the community.
