St John Association of Dominica
Who we are
The St John Association of Dominica is one of the youngest St John Associations and was officially formed in 2002. The idea to join with St John arose from a group of concerned people known as the Emergency Medical Services Organisation of Dominica who saw significant benefits in being a part of a world wide family. St John Dominica signed a relationship agreement and deed of indemnity with the Order of St John in 2004. There is an established Council which oversees policy and decision making for the Association.
St John Ambulance Dominica is registered as a National Voluntary Organisation. It was constituted as a National Council for the Commonwealth of Dominica on 14th May 2002 and was incorporated under the Companies Act of Dominica on 14th August 2002 with Registration Number 1128.
Dominica at a glance
The Commonwealth of Dominica lies between the islands of Guadeloupe (95km north) and Martinique (90km south). It is 47 kilometres long and 26 kilometres wide and boasts the highest mountains in the Eastern Caribbean. Local Dominican wisdom proclaims that there are 365 rivers in Dominica – one for every day of the year. Dominica has vast rainforests, many of which are protected as national reserves. While Dominica lacks the tourist pull of sandy beaches found on neighbouring Caribbean islands, its startling natural beauty and rainforests allows it to market itself as an eco-destination. The population is around 71.500 people of whom approximately 4% are of native Carib descent; representing the largest single population of native Caribs within the islands. Dominica’s main export crop is bananas. With GDP per capita of US$5.448, Dominica is one of the Caribbean’s poorest islands.
What We Do
At the present time, St John Dominica has two divisions. One is in Roseau, the capital of Dominica, and its environs and the Carib Territory has one adult and a cadet division.
First Aid Training: St John Dominica is responsible for the training of all farmers registered with the Dominica Banana Producers Ltd.
We are very willing to provide first aid training to members of the public and to businesses and other organisations on request. Our trainers have received updated training in 2006 and are fully up to date on all First Aid Protocols.
First Aid is of particular importance to families and communities at the onset of the hurricane season.
Public Duties: St John Dominica is present at public gatherings, political meetings, the National Day Parade and Carnival.
Care in the Community: We provide care for the elderly and an annual luncheon is provided by the Carib Territory Division. We also distribute food items at Christmas to deserving families.
