St John Association of Ghana

Who we are

St John Ghana was established in 1937 by the British Police.  Backed by an Act of Parliament, we now operate under subvention from the Ministry of Health. We have about 4,000 volunteers nationwide.

Ghana at a glance

The Republic of Ghana in West Africa borders Côte d'Ivoire to the west, Burkina Faso to the north, Togo to the east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Accra is the capital and largest city. The country's population in 2005 was estimated at just over 21 million people.

The country is well endowed with natural resources, including gold and timber.  Cocoa production is also a major source of foreign exchange.  The majority of the population however, depends on subsistence agriculture.

Ghana obtained independence from British colonial rule in 1957.

Links with other organisations

St John Ghana has strong links with St John in the English country of Avon. Avon sent trainers to Ghana in 2000. In 2003, Ghana trainers visited Avon for a reciprocal visit.  During 2007, a further visit to Ghana took place in order to update skills for ambulance technicians
