St John Nigeria campaign for healthy hearts
Posted: 21 October 2009
St John Nigeria ran a hugely successful CPR training session for the Nigerian Heart Campaign 2009 conference participants this September in Lagos, Nigeria.
Participants received a two-hour CPR training from St John Nigeria trainers as part of “Nigerian Heart 2009” - a three-day international cardiovascular conference and public awareness campaign organised by Heart Campaign™. St John Ambulance also had a first aid stand open for the duration of the conference. The conference was attended by over 200 participants, including medical health professionals and members of the Student Action on Salt and Health.
Dr Patrick Orumbie of St John Nigeria said “We were able to train quite a number of health professionals in CPR and they loved the show we put on for them.” Feedback forms completed by participants rated the CPR training provided St John Nigeria very highly.
St John Nigeria plans to partner with Heart Campaign™ in its next annual Nigerian heart campaign to increase public awareness of heart disease by providing CPR training to schools in Nigeria.
Heart Campaign™ is a UK-based not-for-profit organisation which was set up in October 2007 by Dr Derin Balogun of the University College London Centre for Advancement of Learning and Teaching. Its mission is to raise public awareness about heart disease in Nigeria, improve medical education on heart disease and raise funds for scientific research and public campaigns on the prevention of heart disease in Nigeria.
Heart disease is emerging as a major cause of death in Nigeria. According to World Health Organisation reports, 1 in 10 people in Nigeria suffer from hypertension, or high blood pressure, a common form of heart disease.
High dietary salt and fat intake, obesity, low intake of fruits and vegetable and lack of exercise in Nigeria are thought to be the cause of the high rate of heart disease in the country. It is believed that simple dietary changes could drastically reduce the number of heart disease sufferers in Nigeria.
St John Nigeria would like to thank St John Ambulance Merseyside for assisting with acquisition and transport of first aid training manikins for event. The manikins were put to use for the first time at the Nigeria Heart 2009 conference to train participants in CPR and will be used during future training events.
