The Caribbean Get Together - June 2008

participants fo the CPD event in St LuciaAfter much planning and anticipation, 18 St John trainers from across the Caribbean came together to update their First Aid skills, gain new training techniques and to share ideas with other trainers from around the region. It was the first time the Order of St John has organised a regional event for trainers and it was a huge success.

Two trainers from the St John Associations of Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad, as well as four trainers from St John St Lucia came together for the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) event in Rodney Bay, St Lucia from May 30th to 1st June 2008.

Gemma Mullick from the Order Secretariat said. “The idea for the CPD event has been around for a few years now, so it was fantastic to see it come together. The aim of the event was to provide St John trainers with new skills and ideas for delivering First Aid courses in their countries, as well as to build a network of trainers within the Caribbean, who can share ideas and support each other in the future.”

The workshop was opened by the Resident British High Commissioner, Karl Burrows, who kindly held a reception for participants on their arrival to St Lucia. St John St Lucia took the opportunity to honour some long standing volunteers with their certificates of Membership to the Order of St John.

particpants practicing their First Aid skillsThe CPD workshop was facilitated by three trainers, Dawn Upton from the Priory of England and the Islands and Josephine Hall and Mia Nagasaki-Kelly from the Priory of Canada. During the three days, Dawn, Josephine and Mia got the participants to ‘think outside of the box’ which involved brainstorms, practical First Aid demonstrations, presentations as well as some creative time to develop some homemade training aids!

“The group were incredibly committed to each task they were given and approached every activity with enthusiasm. We wanted the training to  be practical as well as relevant to each trainer’s needs - so they could return to their St John Associations being able to put their new skills into practice and share what they have learnt with others. We look forward to keeping into touch to find out how everyone is getting along!” Josephine Hall, Priory of Canada.

Particpants learning how to communicate betterBy the end of the weekend, the strong bond which had developed between the group was clear. Participants were freely sharing ideas and offering advice and support. Danolar McSween from St John in Grenada said, “The training was excellent. I now have a better understanding of the different areas and procedures involved in First Aid training. I am now more confident and motivated to provide my services to the public through St John Ambulance.”

The Order Secretariat, who organised and funded the CPD event, would like to thank both the Priory of England and the Islands and the Priory of Canada, who co-facilitated the event and provided a huge amount of resources and support throughout. The Secretariat would also like to thank the 18 dedicated trainers, who not only gave up their valuable time to come and participate in the event but also for their enthusiasm and commitment to St John in the Caribbean. The final thanks go to St John St Lucia and in particular their Chairperson, Debra Worrell, for helping to host the event and looking after us all so well. Congratulations to all involved for making it such a successful event.
