Disaster Relief for Myanmar - German St John dispatches teams

Posted: 05 August 2008

Johanniter volunteers delivering First Aid In May 2008, cyclone “Nargis” caused catastrophic destruction in Myanmar. More than 130,000 people were killed and two million required assistance. In response, the Order of St John’s sister Order in Germany, Die Johanniter dispatched three teams to provide necessities to the population.

Following the destruction of the Irrawaddy Delta by cyclone “Nargis“ in May, Johanniter quickly realised that assistance was urgently needed, and proceeded to dispatch three teams. The teams purchased medicine locally and distributed the items together with local physicians throughout the delta.

In addition, Germany’s Federal Agency for Technical Relief and Germany’s Department of Foreign Affairs also sent four relief flights to Yangon. The planes carried four emergency health kits and four special kits for the treatment of fractures, malaria, diarrhoea, and infectious diseases. Johanniter and international relief organisations distributed the goods to health stations and hospitals. Within one month, Johanniter provided medicine and medical consumables to approximately 169,000 people.

Following the emergency aid phase, Johanniter will concentrate on providing long-term assistance to the region. In cooperation with international and local partners, Johanniter will work on projects targeted at improving medical care and protecting the population from future natural disasters. Starting in August, a full time staff member of Johanniter will coordinate all the organisations rebuilding efforts in Myanmar.
