St John lead the way at the Beijing Olympics

St John volunteers in BeijingHong Kong St John Ambulance got into the Olympic spirit this summer, travelling to Beijing to provide a first aid standby service for the 2008 Games.

The 22-strong team, comprising doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, ambulance staff and firemen, were on duty at the cycling and triathlon events, held at Beijing’s Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park from 4 to 25 August.

"Since Beijing started preparing for the Games we took an active role working with the Beijing Emergency Medical Centre" explains Lung Ngai Cheung, a volunteer from Hong Kong St John Ambulance. "It was a rare opportunity and a real honour to be involved. We all did our best to serve the Games well."

St John volunteersA further 600 of the organisation’s members were also deployed at the equestrian and paralympic events held in Hong Kong from July to September, providing first aid coverage for the competition venues, Olympic and Paralympic Villages, media hotel and public transport interchanges.
