The St John Association of Nigeria
Who we are
The Nigerian contact with St John dates way back to 1954 with the formation of the Nigerian Railways Corporation Brigade. The Association has spread since then with the formation of over seven district structures and a presence throughout Nigeria.
St John Nigeria has a central governance structure called the St John Council which is headed by a Chairman, Vice-Chair and other members comprising the various district commissioners and other notable members of the public. They oversee the affairs of the entire St John Association in Nigeria.
Nigeria at a glance
Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is the most populous country in Africa with a population estimated at between 130 and 140 million. It shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, Niger in the north, and borders the Gulf of Guinea in the south. Since 1991, its capital has been the centrally-located city of Abuja. Previously, the Nigerian government was headquartered in the coastal city of Lagos.
The official language is English while other major languages include Yoruba, Ibo and Hausa. Main exports include petroleum and petroleum products, cocoa and rubber
Nigeria declared its independence from the United Kingdom on 1 October 1960.
What we do
The activities of the St John Nigeria are directed along the following:
- Youth development
- Community service
- Ambulance service
- Training
These activities have resulted in:
- The training of health assistants working in various hospitals across the nation
- First aid cover for tournaments, school sports events, charity walks
- Formation of cadet members who are trained to have leadership qualities
- Giving first aid to residents of a disabled home
- Inclusion of St John in the Medical Emergency Response Team which is a first response team in the event of an emergency involving aviation in Nigeria
The organization is presently undergoing a major restructuring/re-engineering with attempts to foster collaboration with a wide range of interested stakeholders in order to strengthen vital health and care-giving activities in the future.
Links
The St John Association in Nigeria is “twinned” with the Country of Merseyside (Priory of England). These links have been developing well in recent times.
Links between the St John Associations in Nigeria and Ghana are being explored in order to foster regional links and to enable training events to meet the needs of both Associations.
