St John Association of Pakistan
Who we are
St John Ambulance was established in Pakistan with the creation of the country in 1947, when 73 of the previously Indian Association Centres became the centre of St John Ambulance Pakistan. Like India, St John and Red Crescent share a joint headquarters in Islamabad although the Red Crescent is the larger of the two organisations. 72 of the 73 branches were subsumed by the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) by Presidential decree in 1980. Today St John Pakistan is focused mainly in Sindh Province with a wide range of operations in Karachi
Pakistan at a glance
Pakistan, officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, is a country in South Asia. It is located in the region where South Asia converges with Central Asia and the Middle East. It has a 1,046 kilometre coastline along the Arabian Sea in the south, and is bordered by Afghanistan and Iran in the west, India in the east and China in the far northeast.
Pakistan is the world's sixth most populous country and has one of its largest Muslim populations. Its territory was a part of the pre-partitioned British India and since its independence, the country has been characterized by periods of military and economic growth interspersed with political instability.
The nation was founded officially as the Dominion of Pakistan in 1947, under the leadership of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and the Muslim League, and was renamed the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1956.
Pakistan has an estimated population of over 160 million as of February 2008. It is expected to surpass Brazil in population by the year 2020 because of the high population growth rate. While Pakistan has made significant economic progress in recent years, a number of factors, including political instability, religious fundamentalism, and violence are major hurdles to social progress and stability. Around 28% of the population are thought to be living in poverty and the country was ranked 136th out of 177th in the 2006 United Nations Human Development Index.
