The Priory in the United States of America

Who we are

The Priory in the United States of America, constituted by Her Majesty in 1996, is one of eight international priories of The Order of St John. The Priory’s primary mission is to support the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. The American Society of The Order of St John was established in 1957, and continues as the American tax-exempt charitable arm of the Priory in the USA.

The Priory in the USA at a glance

Currently, the Priory in the USA has over 1,000 members of The Order of St John throughout the United States. An annual Service of Rededication and Investiture is conducted, and various fund-raising and social events are held throughout the year in different local areas. Over the years, the American members of the Order have raised millions of dollars and provided substantial donations of medical supplies and equipment, as well as doctors and nurses, to support the work of the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem, its Gaza and West Bank satellite eye clinics, and its mobile outreach, training, teaching and research programmes.

In 2007, in addition to general operating support, the Priory in the USA was responsible for the renovation of the Hospital’s Male and Female Nurses’ Hostels; the Women and Children’s Ward, dedicated by HRH The Duchess of Gloucester in December 2007; and the purchase of a Phacoemulsification machine for cataract surgery, among other projects.

In addition, The Priory in the USA has hosted the international Annual Grand Council Meeting of the Order twice, and is pleased to have supported the Grand Prior’s Appeal for The Priory of South Africa for its Home Based Care Training Programme, St. John Associations programmes in Sri Lanka and in Canada, and renovation projects for the Order’s Church crypt and Museum.
